The
Canisius College volleyball team won its fifth straight match - all sweeps -
with a 26-24, 25-19, 25-20 win at Loyola University in Reitz Arena on Saturday
night. The Golden Griffins even their record at 14-14 and move to 9-8 in the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Senior
Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 14
kills while sophomores Emily Elek
and Roxanne Hernandez each had six
kills and three blocks. Senior Janelle
Davis had 31 assists while junior Allyson
Severyn had 22 digs and junior Samantha
Good led the team with four blocks.
"It wasn't our best volleyball of the season tonight, but we stayed composed and found a way to get the win," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "Hopefully we can end our regular season on a high note tomorrow."
Canisius
rallied from a late deficit to take the opening set. The Greyhounds won the
first three points and built a 10-5 lead. The Griffs would come back with a 7-1
run, capped by a kill from Hernandez. The Greyhounds bounced back by winning
three straight points and held leads of 23-17 and 24-21. The Griffs would
fight off three set points and win the last five points of the set to take the
early 1-0 lead.
In
the second set with the score knotted at 9-9, the Griffs won three straight
points to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Greyhounds closed the
deficit to 12-11, but Canisius never let Loyola even the score as the Griffs
closed out the set on a kill from Brawn to go up 2-0 in the match.
Loyola
came out in the third set and built a 13-10 lead, but the Griffs won five
straight points to go up 15-13. The teams would be tied at 17-17 before
Canisius used a 5-1 run to go up 22-18. The Griffs wrapped up the match with a kill
from Good and a service ace from Davis to close out the sweep.
Jac
Bullock led Loyola (8-22, 5-12 MAAC) with 15 kills. Janet Pressler had a
team-high 21 digs while Lauren Andersen led the Greyhounds with 30 assists.
Canisius
wraps up the regular season at Rider on Sunday, with match time in the Alumni
Gymnasium set for noon.
Notes: Canisius
defeated Loyola for the sixth time in the last eight meetings... Canisius is on a
five-game winning streak for the first time since the 2008 season... Canisius has
five consecutive sweeps for the first time in program history... Hernandez has
hit .333 or better in seven of the last nine matches... Severyn had 20 or more
digs for the 41st time in her career... Brawn led Canisius in kills
for the 20th time in 2011.
