The Canisius College volleyball team lost in three sets to rival Niagara University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Wednesday night. The Golden Griffins lost 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 to fall to 9-12 overall and 4-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Jessica Warner led Canisius with eight kills while junior Samantha Good had seven kills. Senior Janelle Davis had a double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs. Junior Allyson Severyn had a team-high 12 digs while sophomore Roxanne Hernandez had six kills on nine attack attempts in two sets off the bench.

"We struggled with a lot of one-touch errors tonight, and that's where Niagara makes teams pay," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We need to come out of our comfort zone offensively and make some changes to find some success, especially against the top teams in this conference. We're facing two more very good teams this weekend.

Niagara went up 11-7 in the first set before the Griffs used a 5-1 run, featuring a kill from Warner and block from Good and Warner, that evened the score at 12-12. The Purple Eagles came back with a 6-1 run of their own to take control of the set and eventually go up 1-0 in the match.

Niagara jumped out to an early lead in the second set as well, building an 11-6 lead on a Canisius attack error. The Griffs slowly fought their way back into the set, tying the score on two occasions (14-14 and 15-15), but Niagara never gave up the lead. The Purple Eagles broke open a 19-17 score with four straight points, including two Niagara blocks, en route to winning their second set of the evening.

The teams stayed close for the first half of the third set, which featured a number of side-outs. Canisius was down 15-14 after a Niagara error, and the Purple Eagles won three quick points to go up 18-14 and never let Canisius get closer than two points the rest of the way as they swept the match and hit .562 as a team in the third set.

Kari Honomichi led all players with 15 kills and also had a double-double with 10 digs. Hannah Hedrick also ahd a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Amanda Wilken added 10 kills and six blocks while Sam Morgan totaled a match-high 27 digs for Niagara (16-9, 10-0 MAAC), which won its 29^th straight match against MAAC opponents.

Canisius concludes its five-match homestand this weekend, starting against Iona on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

Notes: The teams participated in the "Dig Pink" campaign with the Side-Out foundation, wearing pink warm-up shirts and accessories... Canisius falls to Niagara for the sixth consecutive time... Davis had a double-double for the fourth time in the last six matches... Danielle Brawn saw her streak of consecutive matches without double-digit kills end at 11, as the senior didn't have at least 10 kills for the first time since Sept. 10, at Bowling Green... Niagara earned one point in the Battle of the Bridge competition between the schools and now leads 4-0 in the early-season standings... Freshman Olivia Chrzanowski was perfect on service receptions for the sixth time in the last seven matches and is 104-for-106 during that span.
