The
Canisius College volleyball team tried to recover from a two-sets-to-one deficit
but couldn't complete the comeback against Manhattan in the Koessler Athletic
Center on Sunday afternoon. The Jaspers defeated Canisius 23-25, 25-22, 25-15,
20-25, 17-15 as the Golden Griffins fall to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Senior
Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 19
kills while junior Samantha Good had
15 kills and five blocks. Senior Layne
Adams added nine kills, a .421 attack percentage and five blocks. Senior Janelle Davis had her second
double-double of the season with a season-high 51 assists and 10 digs while
senior Joanna Burt had a career-high
16 digs.
"That
energy and level of play necessary to get a conference win wasn't there until
late in the match. No team in this league can be taken for granted," Canisius
coach Cathy Hummel said. "We can't
let this match and this type of loss define us as a team."
Canisius
posted a .364 attack percentage in the opening set to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Griffs overcame an 18-15 deficit, getting two kills from Davis during a 6-2
run that allowed Canisius to take a 21-20 lead. The Griffs went up 24-22 on a
kill from Adams and closed out the set on a kill from freshman Olivia Chrzanowski.
Manhattan
won the last three points of the second set to even the match and then easily
won the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The teams then played two
sets that featured a number of back-and-forth points. Canisius jumped out to an
8-3 lead in the fourth set and never gave up the lead. Brawn scored the final
four points of the set for the Griffs, all on kills, to square the match at two
sets apiece.
Canisius
won the first two points of the fifth set, but the Jaspers won the next four
points to take a two-point lead. Canisius came back with a 3-1 run to even the
match and would build an 11-9 lead on a Manhattan error. The Jaspers then won
three straight to take a 12-11 lead, but Canisius used a 3-1 run once again to
give itself a match point at 14-13 after a tip from Brawn. A solo block from
LaKell Havens fought off the first match point, but a kill from Good gave
Canisius its second match point of the day. However, Manahttan would stave that
off and take the last three points of the set to close out the match, capped by
a kill from Malia McGuinness.
McGuinness
had a match-high 24 kills and also had a double-double with 14 digs. Hollen
Henderson had 54 assists while Mariana Furquim had 15 kills. Havens totaled 11
kills and nine blocks.
Canisius
returns to the road next weekend, starting at Siena on Saturday, with match
time set for 2 p.m.
