The
Canisius College volleyball team split its two matches on day two of the
Radford Invitational Saturday, in Radford, Va. The Golden Griffins defeated
Norfolk State 25-22, 24-26, 25-17 and 25-17 and lost to host Radford 25-16,
25-16, 25-21. Canisius is now 2-6 on the season.
Senior
Renee Lettow led the team with 13
kills on the day to go along with 14 digs and six blocks. Junior Janelle Davis had 11 kills, hitting
.526 and recording 35 assists in the two matches. Sophomore Samantha Good added eight blocks while
junior Layne Adams had 10 kills,
four service aces and six blocks.
"We
were able to get a win today, but we're not where we need to be," Canisius
coach Cathy Hummel said. "We are
still fighting to find consistent success."
Canisius
rallied for the first set win in the opener against Norfolk State, who held a 19-16
lead late in the set. The Griffs won five straight points - getting kills from freshman Roxanne Hernandez, sophomore Emily Elek and Davis to take a 21-19
lead. Norfolk State tied the set at 22-22 before the Griffs won the final three
points, capped by a block from Adams and Davis to win the set.
Norfolk
State rallied for the second set win, fighting off a set point at 24-23 to win
three straight points and tie the match at one set apiece. Canisius used a big
run to win the third set - claiming 13 of the final 16 points to go up 2-1 in
the match. Canisius won eight straight points on the serve of Adams, including
two blocks from Good to win the third set. Canisius controlled the fourth set, going
up 8-3 and never looking back en route to the four-set win.
Radford
controlled all three sets in the second match of the day. The
Highlanders broke open the first set with four straight points to take a 20-14
lead and claim the first set. Radford used the same formula in the second set,
scoring five straight points to expand a 14-12 lead into a 19-12 advantage. The
Griffs never led in the third set as the Highlanders won the first two points
and closed out the match.
Canisius
returns home for three matches next weekend in the Canisius Invitational. The
Golden Griffins host two matches on Friday, starting with Colgate at 3:30 p.m.
in the Koessler Athletic Center.
Match Notes: Davis
was named to the all-Tournament Team after posting a .519 attack percentage, 59
assists and 18 digs... Canisius and Norfolk State met for the first time while
Radford and Canisius met for the fourth time... Good had six blocks against
Norfolk State, giving her five or more blocks in three matches on the season...
Canisius had 11 blocks against Norfolk State.
