The
Canisius College volleyball team continued its perfect start to the conference
schedule with a three-set sweep of the Rider Broncs in the Koessler Athletic
Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 to
improve to 8-8 overall and 4-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, with
the 4-0 start in conference play standing as the first in program history.
Sophomore
Emily Elek led all players with 10
kills, hitting .429 on the day. Sophomore Samantha
Good added eight kills and three blocks while junior Layne Adams had eight kills and also hit .429 in the match.
Sophomore Allyson Severyn led all
players with 15 digs while junior Janelle
Davis had 25 assists and four kills on six attack attempts.
"It
was nice to come back and get a 3-0 win today. We didn't come out flat after Saturday's emotional victory,"
Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said.
"In the past after a big win, we would waste our momentum from the last match
and today we didn't do that."
Canisius
dominated the first set, winning the first two points and going up by as many
as 13 points. Up 12-5 after a kill from Adams, the Griffs won six straight
points on the serve of freshman Sydney
Palka to go up 18-5. A kill from Elek closed out the set.
Canisius
took control with a run midway through the second set. Holding an 8-7 lead, the
Griffs won eight of 10 points, getting kills from five different players during
the run, to take a 16-9 advantage. Canisius then cruised to the second set win,
taking the set on a Rider service error.
Rider
(1-12, 0-4 MAAC) stayed close for the majority of the third set, as a kill from
Megan Knott cut the Canisius lead to 17-16. After a kill from Lettow, Adams then served four
straight points, getting a service ace, kill from Good, block from Lettow and
Good, and kill from Lettow to go up 22-16. The Griffs won the match on a Rider
attack error.
Knott
led the Broncs with nine kills while Amanda Piccolini recorded a match-high 26

Sunday. Match time each day is set for 2 p.m.
