After
losing the first two sets, the Canisius College volleyball team rallied to win
the next three and complete the come-from-behind win over the Loyola Greyhounds
in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday. The Golden Griffins won 13-25,
20-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 15-12 to improve to 7-8 overall and 3-0 in the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Junior
Layne Adams led the Griffs with a
career-high 14 kills to go along with four blocks. Sophomore Samantha Good had 13 kills and four
blocks while senior Jasmine Brennan
added five kills and a career-high five blocks. Senior Renee Lettow had 12 kills. Junior Janelle Davis had a double-double with 34 assists and 14 digs while
sophomore Allyson Severyn had a
match-high 25 digs.
"Any
time you come from two sets down and get a win, that is a character win for
your team. It shows you can never count us out," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "Loyola played very
well in the first two sets and once we found a way to win the third set, the
momentum came to our side and we rode that to the victory."
Loyola
(5-11, 0-3 MAAC) controlled the first two sets, combining for 28 kills and just
four errors in the set to take the 2-0 lead in the match. Senior Nina Camaioni
had nine kills on 16 swings for the Greyhounds in the first two sets.
The
Griffs used a four-point run midway through the third set to turn a 12-12 tie
into a 16-12 lead. Loyola tried to climb back into the set late, winning three
straight points to make it 24-23. The Griffs then used a kill from Adams to win
the set.
Canisius
easily won the fourth set, breaking it open early with a 9-2 run, highlighted
by two service aces from from freshman Jessica
Warner. The Griffs never let the Greyounds get closer than three points the
rest of the way and forced the decisive fifth set.
Canisius
won the first three points in the fifth set on a kill from Good, service ace
from Davis and block from Good and Lettow. The Greyhounds battled back to take
a 6-5 lead on back-to-back kills from Nicole Sarby. The Griffs then scored five
of the next six points to go up 10-7 on a kill from Adams. With the score
12-11, the Griffs used a kill from Good and kill from Brennan to force match
point. After a Loyola kill, Good had another kill to complete the victory.
Camaioni
led all players with 22 kills to go along with 10 digs. Brittany Born led
Loyola with 21 digs while Aubrey Kirven led all players with 49 assists.
Canisius
concludes the weekend against Rider on Sunday, with match time in the Koessler
Athletic Center set for 2 p.m.
Match Notes: Canisius
starts 3-0 in the MAAC for the second time in the last three seasons... Canisius
rallies from a 2-0 deficit for the first time since Sept. 21, 2008, against
Marist in the Koessler Athletic Center... Canisius defeated Loyola for the second
