The
Canisius College women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory over Delaware State on Friday
afternoon at the Desmske Sport Complex in non-league action. The win improves the Golden Griffins to 5-4-0 on the season, while the Hornets slipped to 0-7-0 with the road loss.
The Blue and Gold once again received offense from the usual suspects, as junior Kelly Reinwald tallied five points (two
goals and one assist) and freshman Brianna
Smith recorded two points (one goal and one assist) as
Canisius rolled over the Hornets.
Senior
Kasey Makowski opened the scoring in
the 20th minute taking advantage of a Smith pass to put the Griffs
up 1-0. Canisius would take that lead into halftime after outshooting Delaware
State 14-4. Smith sparked the Griffs offense in the second half as she scored
her team leading sixth goal of the year taking a pass from Laura Ellis.
Reinwald would follow that up netting her fifth goal of the season scoring 4:13
later putting the Griffs up 3-0. Today's match marks the fifth straight game
that both Reinwald and Smith have recorded at least one point. Reinwald would
add her second goal of the day firing home a pass from junior Jenny Griffin making it 4-0. Senior
Jessica Leemans capped the scoring for the Blue and Gold in the 86th
minute tallying her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
Canisius would go on to win the contest 5-0.
"I
think we played a good overall team game," Canisius College head coach Jim
Wendling said. "The second half showed how good we can be if we really apply
ourselves and get creative."
Freshman
Megan Tock made her first start in
net for the Griffs as she made one save on one shot. Canisius kept both
Delaware State netminders busy as the team fired 24 shots toward the box with
11 shots on goal. Several players got the opportunity to play in their first
game of the season as freshman Kelly
McMahon, senior Sarah Galante,
and freshman Molly Root saw game
action.
The
Griffs return to action on Sunday afternoon as they get set for an afternoon
contest with Colgate at the Demske Sports Complex beginning at 12 p.m. That game will be shown on a tape delay basis in New York state through Time Warner SportsNet.
Game Notes: The win pushes the Canisius series
record against Delaware State to 1-0-0... Brianna Smith has now recorded a point
in five-straight contests, which sets a new program record for freshmen... The Blue and Gold are now 4-1-0 in games where both Smith and Reinwald
record a point... If Reinwald finds her way onto the scoresheet against Colgate
on Sunday it will break her longest consecutive game-point streak, which is
currently at five.
