Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second-Half Surge Sparks Women’s Soccer Past Saint Peter’s

Canisius scored three goals in a 12-minute span midway through the second half to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat Saint Peter's, 3-2, in Metro Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.

Senior Elizabeth Cavanaugh, junior Meghan Joerger and sophomore Emilia Nuttall all found the back of the net for the Golden Griffins (6-8-1, 3-6-1 Metro). Redshirt sophomore Ally Smith made her first career start between in goal for Canisius and picked up the win, making five saves.

Mayla McLean and Julia Pinho Magno accounted for the two goals for the host Peacocks (2-13-1, 1-8-1 Metro). Bergljot Kristinsdottir got the start in goal for Saint Peter's and finished with three saves.
Following a scoreless first half, the teams combined for five goals over a 29-minute span in the final frame.

After McLean opened the scoring in the 52nd minute to give Saint Peter's the lead, Canisius struck twice in a 60-second span to grab a 2-1 advantage.

Nuttall brought the Griffs level at the 57:35 mark with her first of the campaign, taking advantage of a loose ball during a corner kick to beat Kristinsdottir for her first goal of the season.
Joerger gave Canisius the lead exactly one minute after Nuttall's equalizer, playing a ball from the left side of the box past an outstretched Kristinsdottir and into the upper right corner of the goal to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Cavanaugh doubled the Griffs advantage in the 70th minute when she finished off a goalmouth scramble to expand the Canisius cushion to 3-1.

The Peacocks made it a one-goal game in the 81st minute when Pinho converted on a penalty kick opportunity after the Griffs were whistled for a foul inside the box.

That would be as close as Saint Peter's would get, however, as Canisius held the Peacocks without a shot over the remainder of regulation to secure the one-goal victory.
