Late Goal Dooms Women’s Soccer Against Niagara

Mahelie Barbeau scored in the 74th minute to break a 2-2 tie and lift Niagara to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Metro Conference women's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports complex in Buffalo.

Barbeau also added an assist to finish with a three-point evening while Caitlyn Gratton notched her league-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season for the Purple Eagles (11-3-0, 8-2-0 Metro). Julia Poissant got the start in goal for the visitors and finished with two saves.

Freshman Romane Lanni notched a goal and an assist for the Golden Griffins (5-8-1, 2-6-1 Metro). Junior Azaria Fagan accounted for the other Canisius goal while freshman Alexa Turmel got the start in goal and made two saves.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the later stages of the second half, Barbeau collected a feed from Caitlyn Grady steps outside the box and unleashed a shot that beat Turmel to give the Purple Eagles the lead.

Poissant and the Niagara defense were able to keep the Griffs from netting the equalizer, limiting the Griffs to one shot over the remainder of regulaton to secure the one-goal victory.

Earlier in the contest, Lanni opened the scoring in the 38th minute as she used a through ball from junior Ava Pickard to get behind the Niagara defense before beating Poissant for her third goal of the campaign.
Gratton tied the contest less than five minutes after Lanni's lid-lifter, heading home a corner kick from Barbeau to knot the score at 1-1.

Niagara took the lead less than four minutes into the second half as Gratton took advantage of a pass from Julia Trinder to create separation before firing the ball past an oncoming Turmel from the middle of the box to give the Purple Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Fagan knotted the score at 2-2 in the 54th minute, tapping home a loose ball after Poissant was unable to corral the ball on a shot off the foot of Lanni, setting the stage for Barbeau's game-winning goal.
