The
Canisius College volleyball team wasn't able to win the close sets on Sunday,
losing in four sets at St. Francis (N.Y.) in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. The Golden
Griffins lost 22-25, 25-7, 23-25, 27-29 and are now 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore
Samantha Good had a season-high 20
kills, while hitting a career-high .643 in the match to go along with five blocks.
Fellow middle hitter Layne Adams matched
her career high with 13 kills to go along with five blocks while sophomore Emily Elek had a career-high eight
kills. Junior Janelle Davis led the
team with 43 assists while sophomore Allyson
Severyn had 15 digs.
"For
as encouraged as we were after our play during the opening three matches, today
was the complete opposite," Canisius coach Cathy
Hummel said. "Outside of the second set, not only didn't we execute well,
but we didn't show any character or get any leadership on the court. That needs
to change for us to be successful this season."
St.
Francis jumped out to a big lead in the first match, going up 18-9 before
Canisius made its run. The Griffs got as close as 23-22 after an ace from
Severyn, but the Terriers won the last two points to hang on for the first set.
Canisius dominated the second set, closing out the set by winning 13 of the
final 16 points. The Griffs had 15 kills and zero attack errors in the set to
even the match at one set apiece.
The
teams played two close sets to end the match, as neither team held more than a
three-point lead in the third set. The score was tied at 18-18 when the
Terriers won four of five points to go up 22-19. The Griffs responded by
winning three consecutive points - getting three straight kills from Good to
tie the match at 22-22. The Terriers won the next two points and after another
kill from Good staved off one set point, St. Francis took a 2-1 lead in the
match on a kill from Christina Perez.
St.
Francis had a 23-20 lead in the fourth set before the Griffs won four straight
points - including a kill from Good, block from Good and freshman Roxanne Hernandez and kill from senior Renee Lettow to take a 24-23 lead. St.
Francis would fight off two Canisius set points and eventually won the match on
its third match point.
Canisius
returns to the court for four matches at the Radford Invitational next weekend
in Radford, Va. The Griffs start play against Davidson on Friday, with match
time set for 3 p.m.
