The
Canisius College volleyball team was swept in both of its matches at the Hofstra/Asics
Invitational on Saturday, in Hempstead, N.Y. The Golden Griffins lost the first
match of the day to Missouri State, falling 25-16, 25-10 and 25-15 and fell
25-23, 25-14 and 25-19 to Texas State in the second match. Canisius is now 1-2
on the season.
Sophomore
Samantha Good led the team in kills
in both matches, recording 11 kills against Texas State and 10 kills against
Missouri State en route to being named to the all-Tournament Team. Sophomore Allyson
Severyn led the Griffs with 13 kills in the first match and 15 kills
against Texas State while freshman Sydney
Palka had 49 assists on the day.
"The
two teams we played today are probably the best we will see all season, as they
will be in or near the top 50 in the RPI," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "The perseverance we showed in the second match
against a team of similar talent to the first match was more than
encouraging. Our freshmen and whole team grew up emotionally today.
"It
was still a pair of 3-0 losses, and at the end of the day, we just didn't
execute as well as the other teams today. However, our energy and competitiveness were
equal to all three teams we played and our team has me excited for the future."
In
the first set against Texas State, the teams went back and forth as the Bobcats
took an early 4-1 lead, but the Griffs responded with an 11-5 run -
getting two aces from Palka and two kills from senior Renee Lettow during the stretch. The Griffs maintained that lead and
were up 19-16 before Texas State scored four straight points and eventually went ahead
22-20. Canisius bounced back with two straight points, including a block from Good
and senior Jasmine Brennan to tie
the match at 22-22. The teams exchanged points to tie at 23-23, but the Bobcats
won the last two points to take the first set.
Texas
State took the lead in the second set and never looked back to take the 2-0
lead in the match. In the third set, Canisius jumped out to an early 8-2 lead
behind two more aces from Palka and three kills from Good. Texas State would
answer right back and used a 12-4 run to take a 14-12 lead. The Griffs were
never able to regain the lead as the Bobcats closed out the match.
In
the first match of the day, Canisius used three straight kills - one from Brennan
and two from junior Layne Adams to
pull within 16-15 in the first set against Missouri State. The Bears then won
four straight points to break the first set open and won nine of the last 10 to
take the first set.
After
Missouri State cruised to a second-set win, the teams played a third set
similar to the first set. The Griffs were down 13-12 midway through the third
set after a Missouri State service error. The Bears then would win five straight
points to take command and eventually close out the match.
Canisius
closes out play on the weekend with a match at St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday.
Match time is set for 1 p.m.
