The
Canisius College women's basketball team held Towson to four field goals during
the final 11-and-a-half minutes to overcome 27 turnovers en route to a 58-52
win over Towson University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday
afternoon. Canisius wins its second straight game to even its record at 2-2 on
the season.
Sophomore
Ashley Durham had a career-high 22
points to go along with a career-high six rebounds and six assists. Freshman Jamie Ruttle had 11 points and eight
rebounds - both career highs - in 20 minutes off the bench. Senior Micayla Drysdale had eight points,
including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, while freshman Jen Lennox recorded a game-high nine rebounds.
"We
committed a lot of turnovers, and part of that is my fault not having us
totally ready for Towson's press, but their athleticism is hard to simulate,"
Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "I'm
proud of the way our team didn't fold when Towson built its second-half lead.
We continued to grind and battled back to get the win."
Both
teams started out slow from the field, with Canisius holding a 4-2 lead on a
jumper from Ruttle just over four minutes into the game. The Tigers then scored
six straight to take an 8-4 lead, but the Griffs scored six straight of their
own to take a 10-8 lead on a jumper from Durham.
After
a layup from Towson's Jessica Haywood made it 11-10 in favor of Canisius at
12:03, the Griffs held the Tigers scoreless for the next eight minutes, 15
seconds, but could only push their lead to 17-10. Towson would make its final
three shots of the half to tie the game at 24-24 at halftime.
Canisius
held a 30-26 after another jumper from Durham, but the Tigers used a 12-1 run
to take a 38-31 lead on a jumper from Sheree Ledbetter. Canisius would score
nine straight points - including two 3-pointers from Drysdale - to take a 42-41
lead. The teams traded baskets and Towson went up 45-44 on another basket from
Ledbetter at the 7:26 mark.
The
Griffs then held Towson without a field goal for nearly seven minutes,
extending their second-half run to 20-7. Two free throws from Drysdale, a layup
from VandeBovenkamp, a putback from Lennox and free throws from Durham put
Canisius up 53-47.
Canisius
went 5-for-6 from the line in the final 46 seconds to close out the win.
Ledbetter
led Towson (2-3) with a career-high 18 points off the bench, the only Towson
player to reach double figures.
Canisius
continues its three-game homestand on Wednesday, when the Golden Griffins host
cross-town rival Buffalo. Game time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for
7 p.m. Fans in attendance will receive a bobblehead of long-time Canisius
moderator Rev. Paul J. Dugan.
