CANISIUS TRAVELS EAST TO MEET SYRACUSE IN THE DOME

  • The Canisius College men's basketball team is set to travel east on the New York State Thruway to take on nationally-ranked Syracuse this afternoon.
  • The Golden Griffins opened the 107th season in school history Friday with an 80-70 win over St. Bonaventure in front of a sellout crowd in the Koessler Athletic Center.
  • The win in the season opener was the program's first since the 2003-04 season and the first under fifth-year head coach Tom Parrotta.

FAST BREAK POINTS

  • The win on opening night makes Canisius 1-0 on the year for the first time since 2003-04 and for just the fourth time since 2000-01.
  • The Griffs improved to 74-31 all-time in season-opening contests with their win over the Bonnies Friday night. (no records for the 1913-14 and 1918-19 seasons)
  • Under fifth-year head coach Tom Parrotta, Canisius has officially sold out the home opener three times.
  • Since 1940, Canisius is 50-20 in home openers and 11-8 when the home opener is played in the Koessler Athletic Center.
  • The win over St. Bonaventure was Canisius' third victory in the last five meetings against its most-common non-league rival. The two teams have played 159 times in the history of the series over a span of 88 years.
  • Today's game against nationally-ranked Syracuse is the Griffs' first since Dec. 17, 2008 when the Blue and Gold played then-ranked No. 11 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome.
  • Canisius was picked to finish seventh among 10 teams in the annual MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Blue and Gold was picked to finish seventh in the 2009-10 preseason poll as well.
  • Seniors Julius Coles and Greg Logins were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team, with Coles earning second-team honors and Logins being recognized as a third-team choice.
  • Coles was also recently recognized as one of five All-MAAC players in the annual Sporting News Preseason publication.

ABOUT THE ORANGE

  • Syracuse started its 2010-11 season Friday night with a 68-46 win over Northern Iowa in the Carrier Dome.
  • The Orange started the season ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Top-25 poll and No. 13 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.
  • In Friday's win, senior Rick Jackson and junior Kris Joseph paced Syracuse with 14 points apiece as the Orange shot 48.9 percent from the field, 47.4 percent from 3-point range and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.
  • Sophomore guard Brandon Triche, who played high school ball with Canisius sophomore Alshwan Hymes, joins Joseph on the preseason Wooden Award watch list.
  • Head coach Jim Boeheim enters today's game tied for fifth all-time in career wins with 830.

CANISIUS - SYRACUSE SERIES

  • This will mark the 69th all-time meeting between these two New York state schools, with the Orange leading the all-time series 44-24.
  • Syracuse has won 19 straight over the Griffs, with Canisius' last win coming Feb. 15, 1975 in Buffalo.
  • The Blue and Gold is 0-9 all-time in the Carrier Dome, with the team's last visit coming Dec. 17, 2008.
  • These two programs first met Feb. 10, 1945 in the Memorial Auditorium, where the Griffs posted a 58-45 victory.
