Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saint Peter’s Second-Half Surge Too Much for Men’s Basketball

Saint Peter's used a 19-4 run midway through the game's second half en route to a 69-57 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Friday night at Run Baby Run Arena in Jersey City, N.J.

Saint Peter's improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in league play with the win, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in conference action with their second-straight loss.

Three Saint Peter's players scored in double figures in the win, led by Bryce Eaton and TJ Robinson, who each had 14 points. Brent Bland added 12 points, a game-high eight rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists to the Peacocks' effort as Saint Peter's improved to 3-1 at home this season.

For Canisius, junior Kahlil Singleton and freshman Brendan Oliver each scored 15 points in the losing cause. Nine of Singleton's 15 points came after he made three 3-pointers, while Oliver added seven rebounds to his final stat line on the night where he made his first collegiate start. For the game, Canisius out-rebounded Saint Peter's by a 41-38 clip, with 17 of those rebounds coming off the offensive glass, but the Griffs shot just 31.5 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from 3-point range for the game, making just seven field goals in the game's final 20:00 of play.

Canisius trailed Saint Peter's 30-23 with 5:15 left in the opening stanza before using a 9-2 run over the final 5:00 minutes of the first half to send the teams into the locker room at halftime tied at 32-32. Singleton and Oliver combined to score all nine of those points in that scoring surge. Out of the intermission, Bland pushed Saint Peter's ahead for good with a 3-pointer from the left wing just 47 seconds into the second half to make the score 35-32 in favor of the home team. But the Griffs answered on their next possession, as junior Mike Evbagharu drove to the bucket and scored in traffic to make the score 35-34.

From there, Saint Peter's took over, outscoring Canisius 19-4 over the game's next 10:05 to take a 54-38 lead with 8:09 showing on the game clock. In that run, Bland and Eaton teamed to score seven of the Peacocks' points. The Griffs battled back and cut the Saint Peter's lead to just nine points 60-51 with 2:21 left on the clock, but a 3-pointer by Robinson from the top of the key as the shot clock expired pushed the Peacocks' lead back to a dozen at 63-51 with 1:19 left in the contest.

Saint Peter's was able to turn 13 Canisius turnovers into 17 points on the night, and the Peacocks ended the ball game with an 18-13 advantage in fastbreak points. The Griffs struggled from the free-throw line in the losing effort, making just 18-of-28 tries from the charity stripe.

GAME NOTES
• Friday was the 94th all-time meeting between the two long-time Jesuit rivals. Canisius leads the series 52-42.
• Friday's loss extended the Griffs' losing skid to Saint Peter's to five straight, dating back to the 2023-24 season.
• The loss dropped Canisius to 18-19 all-time in MAAC openers. The Griffs joined the league prior to the start of the 1989-90 season.
• After closing out the 2024-25 conference schedule at Saint Peter's and then starting the 2025-26 MAAC slate at Saint Peter's, this marks the first time in program history that the Griffs have played back-to-back regular-season conference games against the same opponent in the same building.
• Singleton has now made multiple 3-point field goals in six of the Griffs' first nine games this season.
• Five of Oliver's seven rebounds came off the offensive glass.
• Graduate student Max Jusianiec came off the bench to score seven points to go along with a season-high five rebounds.
