Siena Fires Past Men’s Basketball

Siena's Antonio Chandler recorded his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the host Saints to a 74-52 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at MVP Arena in Albany, N.Y.
 
Chandler was one of four Siena players to score in double figures, as the Saints improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in MAAC play with their seventh-straight victory. Canisius fell to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in conference action with its third-straight defeat.
 
For Canisius, freshman Javante Edwards scored a team-high 12 points, while junior Mike Evbagharu earned a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Freshman Brendan Oliver came off the bench and added nine points and four rebounds to the Golden Griffins' cause, as the Blue and Gold finished the day by shooting 31.5 percent (17-for-54) from the field and 20.0 percent (4-for-20) from 3-point land.
 
A pair of free-throw makes by Edwards with 9:42 left in the first half put Canisius up one at 19-18. From there, the Saints outscored the Griffs 23-5 over the final 9:28 of the opening stanza, with 15 of those 23 points coming from made 3-point field goals. Siena made 11 3-pointers on the day, with seven coming in the game's opening 20:00 of play, sending the home team into the locker room up 41-23 at the break.
 
Siena guard Christian Jones made four of Siena's 11 treys on the day and finished the contest with 12 points, while Justice Shoats and Isaiah Henderson added 10 points apiece. Siena shot 44.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range in the win, as the Saints ended the contest with 17 fastbreak points against none from the Blue and Gold.


 
GAME NOTES
• Sunday was the 115th all-time meeting between Canisius and Siena. The Saints lead the series 60-55.
• The loss on Sunday ended Canisius' two-game win streak over Siena in MVP Arena.
• Siena is Canisius' third-most played opponent. The Griffs have only played Niagara (193 games) and St. Bonaventure (173 games) more.
• Evbagharu is the first Griff with 15-or more rebounds in a regulation game since Frank Mitchell had 17 boards against Marist on Jan. 28, 2024.
• Evbagharu is the second player in the MAAC and the 23rd player in the nation to grab 17-or more rebounds in a game this season, and Sunday's double-double effort is the sixth in his college career.
• Graduate student Myles Wilmoth, who played the 2024-25 season at Siena, played in his 97th career game on Sunday, which is the most for any player on Canisius' active roster.
 
UP NEXT
After a week off for final exams, Canisius will return to non-league action on Saturday, Dec. 13, when the Griffs travel to play at Maine. Game time in Orono, Maine is set for 2 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
