The
Canisius College volleyball team defeated the Manhattan College Lady Japsers in
four sets in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Golden
Griffins won 28-26, 25-15, 20-25 and 25-20 to improve to 12-12 overall and 8-4
in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
The
Canisius middle hitters combined for 28 kills and eight blocks while hitting
nearly .500 on the day. Sophomore Samantha
Good had 15 kills and hit .481 with three blocks while junior Layne Adams had 12 kills, five blocks
and hit .478. Junior Janelle Davis
recorded 37 assists while sophomore libero Allyson
Severyn had 18 digs.
"We
had a tough match on Wednesday, and with the quick turnaround there was no time
to feel sorry for ourselves," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "It's good to bounce back and get a win at home
in front of a good crowd."
Canisius
built a 17-13 lead in the first set by scoring four straight points on the
serve of freshman Sydney Palka. The
Lady Jaspers battled back to make it 19-18, but Canisius maintained the lead
and was up 24-22 after a kill from Adams. Manhattan withstood two set points,
winning three straight to go up 25-24 and have a set point of its own. Canisius
got a kill from senior Renee Lettow
to make it 25-25. After Manhattan went up 26-25 to earn its second set point, the Griffs won three straight
points, taking advantage of three Manhattan errors, to win the first set.
The
Griffs broke open the second set midway through, winning six straight points on the
serve of freshman Lindsay Hanggi,
getting kills from senior Jasmine
Brennan, Lettow and Davis during the run to go up 14-10. Canisius won 17 of
the final 22 points in the set, capped by a kill from sophomore Emily Elek to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After
Manhattan (11-12, 5-6 MAAC) won the third set, Canisius would close out the
match in the fourth set. Canisius slowly built its lead with a 9-4 run to take
a 19-14 lead on a Manahttan attack error. The Lady Jaspers wouldn't go quietly,
winning four straight points to make it 19-18. Canisius responded with a solo
block from Elek and kill from Good to go up 21-18. With the score 23-20 and
coming out of a timeout, the Griffs got another kill from Elek to set up match
point and a solo block from Lettow closed out the match.
Diane
Strutner and LaKell Havens each had 15 kills for Manhattan with Strutner adding 15 digs to post a double-double. Jamie Collareta recorded a match-high 46 assists
while Julie Bies led the team with 16 digs.
Canisius
returns to the court on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins take on Saint Peter's.
Match time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
Match Notes: Both
teams wore pink shirts during warmups and pink accessories during the match as
a part of the Dig Pink campaign with the Side-Out Foundation... The start of the match was delayed 15 minutes due to an electrical issue in the Koessler Athletic Center... Canisius has now
won four straight overall and six straight in the Koessler Athletic Center over
Manhattan... Good and Adams combined for 66 kills and 17 blocks while hitting .453
in two matches against Manhattan this season... Canisius improves to 30-11 since
2006 in home MAAC matches... The .348 attack percentage was the highest for
Lettow since she hit .355 at Marist on Sept. 20... Davis had more than 30 assists
for the first time in four matches... Severyn had a season-high 41 service
receptions in the match, posting a 95.1 service reception percentage... Canisius improved to 6-2 this season when recording 10 or more blocks.
