Sophomore
Erica Vitale broke a school record as the women split a three-way meet with losses
against Siena and Bryant and a 168-46 win over NJIT. The women moved to 2-9 on
the season with the split. On the men's side, a total team effort brought the
men to a double-win, finishing 133-87 over Bryant and 168-46 against NJIT and
moved the Griffs to a 4-4 record on the season.
Vitale
turned in a time of 10:50.35 in the 1000-yard freestyle to break a five-year-old
record set in 2005 by over two seconds. She also swam a season-best time of 2:14.96
in the 200-yard individual medley. Sophomore Michelle Niblock had an
outstanding personal performance in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming the race
in 1:04.62. Freshman Laura Schubbe also turned in a top-notch personal
performance, earning 180.55 points on the one-meter diving board, taking fourth
place overall.
For the
men, strong swims by freshman Robbie Novak in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard
freestyle events set the stage for a winning meet as he took first place in the
1,000 with his time of 10:23.73 and finished the 500 in 4:59.60 for second
place. Fellow freshmen Matt Moessinger, Mike Disco and Tyler Carver also turned
in winning performances as Moessinger raced to first place in the 200-yard
individual medley with a time of 2:04.02 and Carver and Disco turned in back-to-back finishes to take first and second place in the 100 breaststroke with times
of 1:02.11 and 1:03.31, respectively.
The Golden
Griffins return home next on Thursday Jan. 21, when they compete against
long-time conference rival Niagara University at the Koessler Athletic Center
pool. Meet time is set for 5:00 p.m.
