Women's Basketball Wraps up Italy Tour with Dominant Win

POMEZIA, ITALY — Behind a dominant defensive effort, the Canisius College women's basketball team closed out its Italy Tour '09 with a 77-30 victory over Roma Sistemi Pomezia on Saturday night. The Golden Griffins wrap up their three-game swing of Italy with three victories, each by at least 25 points.

Senior Ellie Radke led the team with 18 points and 14 rebounds on 9-of-13 shooting in 26 minutes. Sophomore Steph MacDonald had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists while Brittané Russell filled out the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and eight steals.

Roma Sistemi started the game with an early 6-5 lead before the Griffs totally took the opposition out of its system. Canisius held Roma Sistemi to less than 10 points in each of the four quarters.

Facing that early deficit, Canisius held Roma Sistemi to nine points during the next 17 minutes. The Griffs scored 13 consecutive points to break the game open and built a 38-15 halftime lead.

Playing its most complete game of the year, Canisius carried over its dominance to the second half, holding Roma Sistemi to nine points in the third quarter and six in the fourth quarter.

In its three games in Italy, Canisius averaged a margin of victory of more than 43 points and held its opponents to an average of just over 45 points.
