Women's Basketball Season Ends in WNIT Loss at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Getting 26 points and Chandrea Jones and 25 points Erica Morrow, and using a 27-10 run to break open the game in the first half, Syracuse defeated the Canisius College women's basketball team 90-65 in the WNIT First Round in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday night.

The Golden Griffins end the season with a 24-9 record, setting the program's Division I record for wins in a season (24) and made the program's second Division I postseason appearance and first appearance in the WNIT.

Senior Amanda Cavo led Canisius with 15 points while senior Marie Warner had 13 points and seven assists. Sophomore Micayla Drysdale had 11 points while junior Brittan? Russell had nine points, five rebounds and four assists.

“Syracuse played very well tonight, taking advantage of what we gave them. They made some shots midway through the first half and carried that throughout the game,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We talked in the locker room about the success we had during this season, and once the pain goes away, I hope our girls realize what they've accomplished.”

The teams started out cold, with the score staying at 8-4 for a duration of four minutes, 21 seconds in the first half. Canisius then went on an 8-2 run, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Drysdale. After a jumper from Juanita Ward, Stephanie MacDonald had a layup to give Canisius its only lead of the game at 12-10.

The Orange (17-14) then started their 27-10 run to take control of the game. Morrow had 14 of her 25 points in the first half, with nine of those points coming during the Syracuse run.

The pace slowed in the second half, but Canisius was never able to get closer than 13 points. Warner made it a 44-31 early in the second half, but Morrow scored five straight points to push the lead to 49-31. Jones scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half.
