Volleyball Starts Conference Schedule with a Win

For the third consecutive season, the Canisius College volleyball team opened its home conference schedule with a win, sweeping Rider 30-19, 30-12, 33-31 on Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Griffs (3-9, 1-0 MAAC) were led by Nicole Fafard (East Setauket, N.Y.) who had 12 kills on 22 attempts while also tying for the team lead with 12 digs. Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) had eight kills while Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) had five kills and 15 assists.

“I'm pleased that we got off to a positive start in the conference with our win today,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “After winning the first two games, I was glad to see our team battle back mentally and physically in game three.”

The Griffs opened up game one with two four-point runs and one five-point run, with both of those four-point runs coming on the serve of Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). In game two, Canisius took control from the start, going up 9-1 and never looking back.

In an exciting game three, Rider held the lead early and was ahead 22-14 when Canisius took its last timeout of the game. The Griffs battled back, tying it at 25-25. Rider won the next two points but the Griffs tied it again. No team went up by more than one point until the Griffs won the last two points of the match.

Brittany Hayes led Rider (1-9, 0-1) with 12 kills while Katelyn Thompson had eight kills for the Broncs who hit .045 for the match.

Canisius continues its MAAC schedule on Sunday, when the team hosts Loyola. Match time at the Koessler Athletic Center sets for 2 p.m.

Match Notes: The third game was the first this season that went extra points... Fafard has double-digit kills and digs for the second time in the last three matches... The Griffs have won their opening home MAAC match the last three seasons and five of the last six... Canisius has defeated Rider in seven of the last nine matches between the teams... Canisius opened its home MAAC schedule with Rider and Loyola for the second consecutive season.
