MISSOULA, Mont. ? The Canisius College volleyball team dropped both of its matches at the Ruby's Inn Invitational Saturday, losing in three games to each UC Irvine and host Montana.
The Anteaters (2-1) methodically built a lead in the first game, pulled away late in the second and held on late in the third to defeat Canisius 30-20, 30-19, 30-25. UC Irvine had four separate runs of at least three points in the first game and closed out the second on an 11-2 spurt. In the third game, Canisius (0-3) held a 14-13 lead before UC Irvine went on a 13-3 run to go up 24-16. The Griffs rallied late and got the deficit down to three points on three separate occasions but couldn't get any closer.
Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) and Morgan Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) each had eight kills for the Griffs against the Anteaters.
Larissa Nordyke led the Anteaters with 11 kills on 20 attempts while McCall Miller had eight kills as well. The Anteaters hit .402 as a team in the match, highlighted by a .469 percentage in the first game.
“The goal was to learn in one weekend what could have taken months. With that being said, we did learn a couple of things,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. ”We have a long way to go, but we know there's a lot to look forward to as well.”
In the Griffins' first match of the day, Montana established early leads in the first two games and never looked back to defeat the Blue and Gold 30-14, 30-19, 30-13 Saturday afternoon at the Ruby's Inn Montana Invitational.
Sophomore Michelle Godfrey (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) led Canisius with seven kills while freshman Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had six kills, but committed seven attack errors.
Montana used its height advantage along the front row to control the hitting stats throughout the entire match. Overall, the Grizzlies hit .500 in the match. Micaela Parker led Montana with 11 kills while Whitney Hobbs had nine.
In the first game, the Grizzlies scored the first four points of the match and never let Canisius back into the game by continuing to extend its lead. In game two, Montana used a five-point run early to take a 7-2 lead and never let the Griffs get closer than four. In game three, the Grizzlies took control with an eight-point run midway through that game, extending their 14-8 lead to a 22-8 advantage.
Canisius opens its home schedule next weekend with four matches in the Western New York Invitational. The Griffs start their home slate against Binghamton Aug. 31, with match time set for 7 p.m.
Match Notes: Domo earned All-Tournament Team honors after hitting .319 on the weekend... Of the 12 matches where Godfrey has played at least three games, the sophomore has at least seven kills in nine of those matches... Domo had three kills on seven attempts in game one against Montana... The only other match in program history between Canisius and a team from California was when the Griffs faced Pepperdine Sept. 24, 2005... Lettow had six kills in each match.
