Miranto Earns Academic All-District Honors

Canisius College softball player Katie Miranto (right) has been named the to 2007 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District I first team, it was announced on Thursday. The honor is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) whose schools are in the region. By being named to the first team, Miranto now advances to the national Academic All-America? ballot.

Miranto holds a 3.74 grade point average and has been named to the Dean's List in all five of her college semesters. This is the second
national academic award for Miranto, who was a member of the 2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District I second team.

On the field, Miranto closed out the 2007 regular season with a team best .376 batting average with nine doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 23 runs batted in and 42 runs scored, which set a new school record for runs in a single season. She posted at least one base hit in 36 of her 42 games played and reached base safely in 39 contests during her junior season. The North Tonawanda, N.Y., was named All-MAAC First Team Thursday morning at the league's annual postseason banquet, and also received MAAC All-Academic honors as well.

In order to be nominated for this honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 grade point average in both undergraduate and graduate work. The student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and completed at least one full academic year at the same school.

The softball team opens postseason play Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m., as the team meets No. 4 Marist in the 2007 MAAC Championships at DeLuca Field in Stratford, Conn. The Golden Griffins (24-19, 12-4 MAAC) earned the program's 11th MAAC regular season title last weekend with a sweep of conference foe Siena.
