Hot-shooting Missouri State Beats Women's Basketball

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? In a fast-paced game featuring 27 made 3-pointers, the Canisius College women's basketball team lost 97-89 on Friday night, to Missouri State in the Hammons Student Center.

Brittan? Russell set a career high for the second consecutive game, tallying 25 points while pulling down eight rebounds to go along with five assists and four steals. Amanda Cavo matched her career high with 28 points, going 10-of-18 from the field and 7-of-11 on 3-pointers. Playing in her hometown, Laura Buetow had 10 points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes for the Golden Griffins (4-7).

“We continue to dig ourselves in a hole out of the gate, and it takes a lot of energy to climb back into the game,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “Two teams who weren't making a lot of shots made a lot of them tonight, including a number of tough shots by Missouri State.”

Maggie Dwyer had a game-high 29 points while Melissa Busby had 23 as she went 7-of-12 from behind the arc. Marisha Brown had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting while Tahnee Balerio scored 17 for the Bears (2-8) while dishing out 10 assists.

In the first half, Missouri State rode the hot shooting of Busby, who made her first five 3-point attempts as the Bears went up 18-3 at the 15:15 mark. The Griffs responded with a run of their own, a 17-3 stretch that made the score 21-20 in favor of Missouri State.

The teams stayed close for the rest of the half and, the Golden Griffins eventually took the lead at the buzzer on a 3-pointer by Russell.

The Bears pulled away midway through the second half, going on a 15-3 run to turn a 68-63 lead into a 17-point advantage, which was capped by two jumpers by Balerio. Missouri State shot 56.7 percent in the second half and 50 percent overall in the game.

Canisius concludes its three-game road trip after Christmas when the Golden Griffins play at Maryland-Eastern Shore Dec. 29.

Canisius extended its streak of games with a made 3-point field goal to 401 on a make by Cavo early in the first half... Canisius is 1-4 all-time against the Missouri Valley Conference... Buetow picked up two fouls in the opening 32 seconds of the game... The 97 points allowed by the Griffs were the most since St. John's had 98 Nov. 20, 2004... Canisius had a season-low 11 turnovers... The 89 points were the most by Canisius in a road loss since it lost 100-91 at Bucknell Nov. 27, 2002... The Griffs had two players score 25 points in the same game for the first time since Nov. 24, 1996, a 108-93 loss against Marquette. Heather Fiore had 29 points while Mimi LaMagna had 25 points.
