Fairfield Sweeps Volleyball

Box Score

Fairfield University controlled all three games en route to defeating the Canisius College volleyball team 30-28, 30-25, 30-24 on Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

In her second straight start, Morgan Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) led Canisius (8-15, 6-6 MAAC) with eight kills as six different Golden Griffins had at least five kills in the match. Mary Curran (West Islip, N.Y.) also started for the second consecutive day and had five kills and no errors while fellow freshman Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) also had five kills and no errors in the match. Domo had two solo blocks and four block assists while Curran had three block assists to go with a solo block.

The first game was the closest of the match, despite Canisius never being able to take the lead. For the majority of the game, Fairfield held an advantage that ranged between one and three points. The Griffs eventually tied the game on a service ace by Lauren Lackovich (Bloomington, Ill.) to make the score 27-27. Fairfield then took three of the next four points to win the first game.

The Stags broke open games two and three with small runs in the middle of the games. Fairfield used a 5-1 run in the second game to make a 20-17 lead a 25-18 advantage. In the third game, it was a 7-1 run to build a 10-point cushion. The Griffs tried to rally late, getting as close as 28-23, but the Stags got kills from Lauren Hughes and Karlie Urbaniak to close out the match.

“Today was another competitive game against a very good Fairfield squad,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “At this point of the season, we need to find a way to win these types of matches.”

Katie Mann led all players with 23 kills and hit a match-high .571. Urbaniak had 13 kills while Hughes had 11. Canisius returns to the road next weekend and starts its weekend trip at Loyola on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes:
Domo had a career-high three digs in the match as the freshman had eight coming into Sunday... Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) had 21 digs and is averaging 6.24 digs per game in conference matches... Curran's 13 kills on the weekend are the most by the freshman in two consecutive matches on the season. Her previous best was seven... Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) has 37 digs in the last three matches.
