Matt Mazurek Named First Team All-MAAC

Canisius College senior Matt Mazurek (Silver Creek, N.Y.) has been named first-team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for the second consecutive season, it was announced Wednesday at the league's annual baseball banquet.

Mazurek is the first Canisius player to earn first-team all-league honors in consecutive seasons since catcher Daryl Besant earned the honor in 1997 and 1998.

Mazurek ranked seventh in the conference in batting average (.358), second in on-base percentage (.483) and fifth in steals (18). The outfielder set a school record with 68 hits and posted 12 doubles, two home runs and 44 RBIs. He started all 54 games in right field and registered a .990 fielding percentage.

John Axford (Port Dover, Ontario), Mike Bax (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), Brian Hartmann (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Kevin Ryan (Amherst, N.Y.) and Alex Winiewicz (Clarence, N.Y.) were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed two semesters at the institution and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

Canisius finished the campaign with an 18-36 overall record and a 9-18 MAAC mark. The 18 wins were the most for the Griffs since the 1997 campaign.
