Card and Mazurek Named Canisius Athletes of the Year

Canisius College women's lacrosse player Whitney Card (top right) and baseball player Matt Mazurek have been named the Canisius College Female and Male Athletes of the Year at the athletic department's annual student-athlete banquet, held Tuesday evening in the Richard E. Winter '42 Student Center.

Card, a 5-foot-9 sophomore attack, was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Year after leading the MAAC in goals with 53, which set a school record for goals in a single season. A three-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week award winner, she is already the program's leader in career points (168) and is just six goals shy of reaching the 100-goal plateau in her career. She is a two-time first-team All-MAAC selection and is one of three players to be honored as a MAAC All-Tournament selection after the Golden Griffins made their first appearance in the conference's title game, which the team lost to Le Moyne April 30. The women's lacrosse team finished the 2006 campaign with a 12-7 overall record, setting the program record for wins in a season.

Mazurek (bottom right) leads the Griffs with his .363 batting average and ranks second in the league in hits with 57. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound right fielder was a first-team All-MAAC selection in 2005 and also earned Preseason All-MAAC accolades this year. He just passed former Griff Bill Doll as the school's leader in hits during a single season after picking up two hits in the team's game at Le Moyne April 29. In just two seasons in Blue and Gold, Mazurek has moved into 10th all-time in career hits, and he currently ranks among the MAAC's leaders in batting average, on-base percentage, doubles, RBIs, walks and stolen bases. Canisius is 14-30 overall in 2006 and recently put together a six-game winning streak, the program's longest since the 1994 season.
