Corey Herring Leads Men's Hoops Over Marist

Corey Herring tallied career highs of 28 points and nine rebounds to lead the Canisius men's basketball team (3-8, 2-1 MAAC) to a 76-67 victory over Marist (5-5, 0-3 MAAC) in the McCann Center Thursday night.

Herring (right) was 11-for-16 from the floor and 3-for-4 from 3-point range in the game. He scored 16 points in the second half as the Griffs scored 51 in the frame and shot 55.2 percent from the floor.

Herring's biggest bucket came with 1:24 to go and the Griffs up seven points. Marist pressured Canisius into calling a 30-second timeout. In the inbounds play, the Griffs put four players at halfcourt and Herring in the paint.

Kevin Downey threw a pretty pass to Herring as he spun away from Carl Hood, scored and was fouled, making the margin 68-59. Canisius went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe inside the last 1:03 to seal the victory.

Chuck Harris totaled 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Jon Popofski collected 12 points and four rebounds. Downey finished with eight points and six assists, and Darnell Wilson had eight points and a blocked shot.

Ryan Stilphen and Jared Jordan each netted 17 points to lead Marist, and Jordan added seven assists. Carl Hood scored 10 points.
A Herring triple gave Canisius a 25-24 cushion late in the first half, but the Red Foxes scored seven straight points to finish the half and led 31-25 at the break. Will Whittington got loose for a pair of 3-pointers early in the second frame as Marist's lead grew to 39-27 with 17:41 remaining.

The Griffs responded with an 11-4 run as Herring scored four points during the stretch to trim the margin to 45-44 with 13:41 to play.
“I'm really proud of this team,” said Canisius coach Mike MacDonald. “We were down 12, and things weren't looking good. But we stayed positive, battled, executed our offense and played together as a team.”

Trailing 49-48, Canisius used an 8-0 run, capped by a Herring 3-pointer, to take a 56-49 lead with 7:23 left. From there, Harris converted a 3-point play, and Downey scored consecutive baskets as the Griffs took a 63-54 cushion with 4:23 to go.

The Griffs are back in action at Fairfield 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
