Cross Country Opens the Season at the Running Fit - UDM Invite

Both the men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2004 season at the 18th Annual Running Fit-UDM Invitational in Northville, Mich., Saturday morning. The men's team placed third out of five Division I schools, while the women's team placed sixth out of six D-I programs.

The men's team finished the event with 93 team points. Bucknell took top honors as a team in the men's race, posting 18 points. John Beyer was the Griffs' top finisher, coming in 46th place with a time of 22:25. Freshman Christian Volk placed 53rd overall with his time of 22:45.

Bucknell took the team honors on the women's side as well, posting 29 team points overall. Canisius registered 149 team points in the event with senior Aileen Hoak placing 11th overall to register as Canisius' top female runner. Hoak ran the 5,000-meter course in 19:24. Freshman Chelsea Fitzgerald placed 59th overall in her first collegiate event with her time of 22:07.
Both programs will return to action next week at the 2004 National Catholic Championships in South Bend, Ind.
