Niagara Defeats Women's Lacrosse 8-3

Ashley Baker tallied three goals and two assists to lead Niagara University (3-1) to an 8-3 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over Canisius College (0-4) Monday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Canisius goaltender Rasheeda Brenton made 11 saves on 19 shots on goal in a hard-fought defensive battle. Niagara goalie Michelle Nucci posted eight saves in 56:54 of action. There were 38 fouls in the contest between the two teams.

Kathryn Kenneally posted two goals and an assist for the Purple Eagles. Kristen McGuinness, Anne McNall and Brittany Farrugia scored the goals for the Golden Griffins.

The Purple Eagles scored the first three goals of the game before Canisius got on the board. Amanda Marts was awarded a free-position attempt and fed Farrugia for the score. The lead remained at 3-1 until McNall scored off an Elise Crawford feed with 1:28 left in the first half to trim the margin to 3-2.

Niagara's Rachel Jones netted a free-position goal with 25 seconds left, and Courtney Dowd scored off a free-position attempt with three seconds remaining as Niagara led 5-2 at the break.

Kenneally opened the second half with a goal just 27 seconds into the frame to give the Purple Eagles a 6-2 cushion. McGuinness scored off a Kelly Bunt assist with 28:39 to play to make the margin 6-3, but the Golden Griffins couldn't muster another tally. Baker and Kenneally netted the last two goals of the game for the final margin.

Canisius opens conference play at Manhattan and Fairfield this weekend.
