Women's Lacrosse Beats Manhattan on Senior Day

Sophomore Maddie Fitzgerald scored six goals to pace Canisius to a 17-14 victory over Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Senior Hailey Rooney chipped in a career-high five goals for the Golden Griffins (6-10, 3-5 MAAC). Defensively, sophomore Harper Weatherdon was credited with four ground balls and one caused turnover.

For Manhattan, Olivia Cruthers tallied four goals as the Jaspers (2-14, 1-7 MAAC) who were eliminated from postseason contention, after suffering their sixth-straight loss to end the season. Emily Fiola notched five ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Despite winning the game, Canisius' season came to an end after Rider defeated Quinnipiac, 16-13. Either Rider or Marist will secure the final spot in next weekend's MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship tournament.


HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN POSTGAME COMMENTS

The Griffs took an early 2-0 lead after goals by sophomore Megan Previdi and senior Sophie Socker. The Jaspers responded, ending the first quarter riding a 6-1 scoring run to hold a 6-3 advantage over the Blue and Gold after one quarter of play.

Canisius opened the second quarter by scoring three consecutive times to even the contest at 6-6. Manhattan regained the lead later in the frame at 8-7 with 6:55 remaining in the opening half. From there, Fitzgerald took over, scoring three times in the span of 2:25 to give Canisius a 10-8 lead, and a goal by Leah Pfeiffer with 1:13 reaming before intermission sent the Griffs into the locker room at halftime up 11-8.

Rooney scored two times in the first 3:22 of the third quarter to extend the Griffs' lead to 13-8 and she added her third goal of the frame with 2:34 left in the third to give the Blue and Gold a 16-10 advantage. Manhattan scored the game's next four goals to trim the Canisius cushion to 16-14 with 6:21 left to play in the fourth, but freshman Brooke Hippert's goal off an assist Previdi capped the scoring, pushing the Griffs to the 17-14 victory. Previdi ended the day with a pair of assists, while junior Meg Hiltz led all players with a game-high four helpers.

Sophomore goalie Olivia Licardi earned the win in between the pipes for the Griffs after she made nine saves. Canisius out shot Manhattan 37-27 in the win, and the Griffs were 18-for-20 on clearing chances in the victory.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's game was the 26th all-time meeting between the two programs. Canisius leads the series over Manhattan by a 15-11 count.
• Canisius saw two Griffs score five-or-more goals in the same game for the first time since April 2, 2022, when Paige Stachura scored six times and Skylar McArthur added five goals in a 17-15 victory over Iona.

• Fitzgerald's six-goal effort marked the second-straight game where she scored six goals for the Blue and Gold.
• The four assists for Hiltz was a season-high for the junior. She recorded multiple assists in three games this season.

• Rooney's career-high five goals on Saturday allowed the senior to reach the 20-goal plateau for the first time in her college career.
• Prior to the start of Saturday's game, Canisius honored its four seniors in the Class of 2025 - Socker, Rooney, Alex Czepukaitis, and Taylor McArthur.
