Women's Soccer Signs Lew-Port Star Ponzi

BUFFALO, N.Y. ? Canisius College head women's soccer coach Meagan Dougherty has announced that Lewiston-Porter graduate Marissa Ponzi (Lewiston, N.Y.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Canisius and play soccer for the Golden Griffins in the 2002-03 academic year.

Ponzi, a first team All-Niagara Frontier League selection at forward in her senior season, was selected to play in the WNY Exceptional Senior All-Star game. Ponzi was the Lancers' leading scorer over the past two seasons, tallying 24 goals and adding 20 assists. She was named her team's Most Valuable Player in 2001 and was selected to the Lewiston-Porter Cup All Tournament Team in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

"Marissa has great speed and has the ability to shoot the ball at will," said Dougherty. "She will either play up top for us or at the outside midfielder position and I expect her to be a scoring threat whenever she touches the ball."
A three-sport athlete at Lew-Port, Ponzi was also a member of the Lancers' basketball and track teams, earning All-NFL honors by placing second in the 4x100-relay at the New York State Championships in June.

"I am really looking forward to playing Division I soccer for Coach Dougherty and the Canisius soccer program," said Ponzi. " I hope I can make an immediate and positive impact on the team."

Ponzi, a member of the National Honor Roll at Lewiston-Porter, plans to study athletic training at Canisius.
