Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Falls in MAAC Championship Game

The Canisius women's soccer team's season came to an end on Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y., as Sacred Heart won the 2025 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship game in penalty kicks.

After playing 110 minutes in a wintry mix that caused both teams difficulty in creating any true offensive chances, the fourth-seeded Pioneers earned the program's first MAAC women's soccer title by defeating the Golden Griffins 4-3 in the penalty-kick session.

With the win in PKs, Sacred Heart earns the MAAC's automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship tournament field with a record of 11-8-2. Canisius' season ends with a record of 8-8-3.

The two teams each converted on three penalty kicks in the shootout, sending the deciding session to a sudden-victory scenario. Sacred Heart's Theanna Burnett found the back of the net with her spot kick to give the Pioneers the advantage. Moments later, Sacred Heart goalkeeper Kyran Thievon made a diving stop on Canisius' chance to secure the victory for her team.

The Griffs held a 9-6 advantage in shots and both teams had three shots on frame in the 110 minutes of regulation and overtime. Both Thievon and Canisius goalkeeper Chloe Tseros made three stops on the day. Sacred Heart had eight corner-kick opportunities against Canisius' five for the contest, with three of those chances coming in the overtime periods.
