Central Michigan's Hot Shooting Second Half Downs Women's Basketball

Central Michigan freshman Casey Manning came off the bench and scored a career-high 18 points to lead three other CMU players in double figures as the Chippewas downed Canisius College 69-62 Monday night in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Chippewas and improves their record to 6-5 on the year. The Griffs see their record fall to 5-5 with the loss.

Canisius junior guard Jenel Stevens had a game-high 22 points and pulled down a career best 14 rebounds in the losing effort. She was the only Canisius player to score in double figures. Sophomore guard Cavanaugh Hagen had nine points and freshman guard Karly Chesko added eight points and three rebounds off the bench for the Blue and Gold. Senior Kiea McFadden had seven points and dished out a team-high four assists in the loss.

Central Michigan's Laurie Henderson and Lindy Hatfield each scored 13 points in the win, while the team's leading scorer, Desiree Eidson was credited with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Griffs shot 44.8 percent from the field in the first half while holding the host Chippewas to just 29.7 percent from the field in the game's first 20 minutes to take a 33-30 lead into the intermission. In the second half, the host Chippewas shot 51.6 from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point line, while holding the Blue and Gold to just 28.9 percent from the field over the game's final 20 minutes of action.

Central Michigan now holds a 4-0 all-time series lead over the Golden Griffins. The Blue and Gold will play their final non-conference game of the 2002-03 season Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at home when the team plays host to St. Francis (Pa.) in the Koessler Athletic Center. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
