Griffs Drop Eleventh, Twelfth in a Row

BUFFALO, NY-The Canisius College baseball team fell twice to Duquesne University on Thursday, May 3. The Dukes followed up a 16-7 victory with an 11-9 win in the second game.

In the first game, the Dukes effectively put the Griffs away with a ten run second inning. The Griffs withstood additional Duquesne runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, and were able to mount a comeback.

The Griffs scored twice in the third on a double by Jesse Burdick (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) brought Paul Fede (Cranston, RI/Mt. St. Charles) and Jerry Burke (Lancaster, NY/Canisius) home.

Dusty Baker (Amherst, NY/Erie Community College) homered in the sixth inning, then Canisius scored four runs in the seventh, thanks to RBIs from Fede, Eric Posa (North Tonawanda, NY/Cardinal O'Hara), and Matt Van Geene (Barrie, ON/St. Joseph's).
The Griffs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of game two. Canisius scored twice in the second then added a run on an RBI single by Fede in the third.

After Duquesne grabbed a 9-3 lead in the top of the sixth, the Griffs responded with six runs in the sixth to tie the game. Burdick got things started for the Griffs with his fourth homer of the year. Van Geene and Burke also notched RBI's in the inning, while Chris Shanahan (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community College) picked up a pair.

However, the Dukes scored twice in the top of the seventh to notch the 11-9 victory.

With the losses, the Griffs fall to 10-26 and are mired in a twelve game losing streak. The Griffs next return to conference action for the remainder of the season. They will take on Manhattan for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, then conclude the season with a series against St. Peter's on May 12 and 13.
