Hockey Announces Postseason Award Winners

The Canisius College hockey team recently announced the 2007-08 award winners at the program's annual postseason banquet.

Sophomore Andrew Loewen won the team's Most Valuable Player for the second-consecutive season. The sophomore recorded a goals against average of 2.94 and a save percentage of .911 during the season. In conference play, Loewen ranked second in Atlantic Hockey with a save percentage of .920 and fourth with a goals against average of 2.54.

Loewen had a number of record-setting performances during the month of January, leading to Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Month accolades. He set school monthly records with a goals against average of 0.99 and a save percentage of .969 while also recording a school-record 201:00 scoreless streak. Loewen led all goalies in the league with four weekly honors.

Freshman Vincent Scarsella earned three awards on the night. He picked up the award for leading the team in scoring in addition to being named the Rookie of the Year and the Top Forward. Scarsella posted a team-best 31 points on nine goals and 22 assists in his first season with the Blue and Gold. Scarsella led all Atlantic Hockey freshmen in points and ranked 13th in the country among rookies in points per game.

Senior Kyle Bushee earned Top Defensemen accolades for the second-straight season. Bushee led all Canisius defensemen and ranked fifth in the league for scoring by blue liners with 18 points on six goals and 12 assists.

Sophomore Ryan Klusendorf received the Most Improved Award. The redshirt-sophomore played in 30 games during the 2007-08 season after missing all but three contests his first two seasons due to injury and recorded 10 points on four goals and six assists.

Senior David Kasch earned the Tom Chapman Memorial Award as the team's unsung hero. Kasch was named the Atlantic Hockey Best Defensive Forward and recorded 25 points on 10 goals and 15 assists.

Senior Scott Follett received the Dr. David B. Dietz Hockey Booster Award, which goes to a player for his dedication in both athletics and academics. The senior defender played in 28 games during his final season, recording three points on a goal and two assists.

Sophomore Peter MacDougall and freshman Taylor Anderson were also awarded with a pair of community service awards. Anderson was recognized for his work with Hasek's Heroes.

Canisius also honored its five seniors at the banquet ? Bushee, Follett, Kasch, Greg Brown and Bryce Luker.
