Shariah Gailes named to Preseason All-Metro First Team

Gailes Garners Preseason All-Metro Accolades

Canisius senior forward Shariah Gailes was named a Preseason All-Metro Conference First Team selection as the league office announced its women's basketball preseason awards at 2026 Metro Basketball Tipoff at the Ocean Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J., on Wednesday. 
 
Gailes is the first Golden Griffin to be a preseason all-conference first team pick since Jamie Ruttle was recognized before the 2012-13 season. The Brooklyn, Ohio, native also garnered preseason all-conference accolades for the second year in a row, as she was named preseason third-team all-league before the start of the 2025-26 campaign. 
 
In 25 games played last season, Gailes led the Griffs in scoring (12.4 ppg), rebounding (8.4 rpg) and field goal percentage (.486). She scored in double figures 15 times and surpassed the 20-point plateau on three occasions, punctuated by a season best 28-point performance against Mercyhurst last November. 
 
On the glass, Gailes grabbed double-digit rebounds five times. She pulled down a career-high 16 caroms against Battle of the Bridge foe Niagara in January, highlighting one of her three double-double performances during her junior campaign. 
 
Gailes is joined on the Preseason All-Metro First Team by Kaety L' Amoreaux and Meghan Andersen from Fairfield, Siena's Francesca Shiro, Justine Henry from Marist and Sacred Heart's Oralye Kiefer.
 
In the preseason coaches' poll, defending conference regular season and tournament champion Fairfield garnered all 13 first-place votes and 169 total points to claim the top spot. Siena (141) was in second, followed by Sacred Heart (134), Iona (127) and Mount St. Mary's (108) to round out the top five. 
 
Quinnipiac (103), Marist (87), Manhattan (83), Merrimack (80) and Saint Peter's (50) claimed spots six through 10 while Rider (43), Canisius (42) and Niagara (16) rounded out the poll. 
 
Entering their third season under head coach Tiffany Swoffard, the Griffs open the 2026-27 season on the road at New Hampshire on Nov. 5, while their home opener is scheduled for Nov. 8 against UMass Lowell. Both games are a part of the America East - Metro Conference Challenge.
