The Canisius Volleyball team lost their final match of the YSU Invitational, presented by Mercy Health, Saturday in Youngstown, Ohio.

Canisius was swept by Youngstown State 3-0 (13-25, 18-25, 20-25) in the final game of the tournament. Despite the loss Canisius junior Emma Isroff earned All-Tournament team honors. Isroff led the team in Kills during the three-match tournament. She also led the Golden Griffins among starters in Attack Percentage with a .358 mark.

The first set of the day found Canisius down big early with a score of 17-5 in favor of Youngstown State. The Golden Griffins were never able to mount a comeback losing the first set by a 12-point margin.

Canisius regrouped after the first set to take their first lead of the day in match two, where they eventually led 13-9 mid-way through the second set. Youngstown State stormed back with a six-point rally to reclaim the lead and eventually a win in set two.

In the third set Canisius found themselves down early but with the help of a five-point rally found themselves ahead 8-7 early in the third set. Both teams traded rallies before Youngstown State finished the set and the match with a 25-20 victory over Canisius.

The Penguins were led by junior Kylie Surratt who had 11 kills and 10 digs, followed by her teammate Abbie Householder who recorded 9 kills and 9 digs. Youngstown State as a team recorded 38 kills, to the Canisius 30.

Kameron Blizniak led all players in assists with 17, six of which came in the decisive third set.

The Golden Griffins were once again led by freshman Kenslie Warmbrodt, who tallied 15 assists to mark her third-straight match leading the team in that category. Emma Isroff and Julia Lenik both led the team with 9 Kills each, while senior libero Brenda Reynaga led all players with 14 digs.

GAME NOTES

• This contest marked the 23rd meeting between these two teams since the first meeting in 1990

• Reynaga's 14 digs was good enough to lead the team in digs for the third match in-a-row 

• Isroff earned All-Tournament honors after averaging 2.82 kills per set and led the team with 32.5 points through three games

• Freshman Emily Helmers leads the team in Blocks with 7.0, fellow freshman Kenslie Warmbrodt leads the team in Assists with 53 through the first three games of the season

UP NEXT

Canisius travels back to Buffalo to take on the UB Bulls at Broadview Arena, on Wednesday, Sept. 2. This mid-week match is set to start at 6 p.m.
