Volleyball Comes Up Short in Five-Set Loss at Rider

Canisius junior Emma Isroff recorded a season-high 16 kills and senior Hannah Kos added a career-high 13 kills, but it was not enough to lift Canisius out of a 2-0 deficit, as the Golden Griffins fell 3-2 to Rider in five sets in Metro Conference volleyball action Friday evening at Canastra Hammer Arena in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The host Rider Broncs took a 2-0 lead in the match after taking the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-18. Canisius won the third set 25-16 and evened the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth frame. But in the fifth set, Rider hit .600 as a team en route to the 15-12 victory.

The win moved Rider to 2-11 overall and 1-3 in Metro Conference action, while the Griffs fell to 2-12 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Isroff's 16 kills came on 30 swings. She also added six digs and a career-high five service aces in the losing cause. Kos added four digs, a pair of aces and a block assist to her career-best 13 kills, while redshirt-junior Julia Lenik chipped in 12 kills and 13 digs for her fourth career double-double performance.

For Rider, which snapped an 11-match losing skid with the victory, Rylah Robinson posted 14 kills and two block assists, while Toni Bonacci chipped in 12 kills to go along with three aces, five block assists and a pair of digs. Setter Makenna Mason fueled the Rider offense with a match-high 48 assists.

Trailing 2-0 out of intermission, Canisius forced a fourth set thanks to a 25-16 victory in the third set. In that frame, Isroff recorded five kills and scored two aces to lead the charge for the Blue and Gold, while Kos chipped in four kills. Trailing 19-17 in the fourth set, the Griffs outscored the Broncs 8-3 to force the decisive fifth set. In that scoring run, Kos had a pair of kills and Isroff was credited with a service ace. Canisius sophomore setter Anna Rich closed out the 25-22 set victory for the Blue and Gold with a kill off an assist from Kos. That was Rich's only kill on the night, and just her second of the season.

In the final set, neither team led by more than two points throughout the frame until a Canisius attack error put Rider up 14-11 in the later stages. Canisius cut the Broncs' lead to 14-12 thanks to a kill by senior Azoria Davis, but on the ensuing serve, a kill from Rider's Molly Rohde, one of her 11 on the night, sealed the victory for the home team.

Davis ended the contest with a career-high nine kills for the Griffs, while senior libero Brenda Reynaga added a team-best 15 digs. Rich posted 23 assists, three digs and a block assist to the Griffs' effort, while freshman setter Kenslie Warmbrodt was credited with a team-high 27 assists to go along with seven digs and a block assist.
