Women’s Basketball Set to Host Manhattan on Kid’s Day

The Canisius women's basketball team will host its 26th annual Kid's Day, presented by Independent Health, at the Koessler Athletic Center on Jan. 8, when the Golden Griffins play host to Manhattan. Game time is set for 11 a.m.

Traditionally, the loudest and most energetic day on the entire schedule, the Koessler Athletic Center will once again host a capacity crowd of local elementary school students, parents and teachers.

This event highlights the Independent Health Foundation's Fitness for Kids Challenge, a free elementary school program that challenges students to build life-long healthy habits. The Kid's Day game will be a highlight of the season, combining the excitement of collegiate basketball with the opportunity to inspire young students from local public schools.

"The Kid's Day game is one date that we always circle when our schedule is released," Canisius head coach Tiffany Swoffard said. "When I was hired here, so many people told me about Canisius' Kid's Day game. The energy the kids bring to the Koessler Athletic Center on that day is absolutely unmatched. It is a great way for our team to connect with the local community, and our student-athletes and staff take a tremendous amount of pride in knowing that we host the best Kid's Day in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference every year."

"We are thrilled again to be part of Canisius' Kid's Day game, and excited to have our high participating schools from the Fitness for Kids program in attendance," Carrie Meyer, executive director of the Independent Health Foundation, said. "What is truly inspiring about the Fitness for Kids Challenge program is how it becomes part of daily life for students, teachers, and families. We know how critical it is not only to learn healthy habits at a young age, but to do so in a fun way. By participating in this program, schools are investing in their students' holistic health by not only teaching ways take care of their bodies but with emphasizing good mental health practices including emotional awareness, friendship building, and goal setting."

Thousands of students from area schools will attend, dance and sing along enthusiastically as they enjoy a great day of NCAA Division I women's college basketball. The event not only provides a chance to introduce elementary-school-aged students to the collegiate sports experience but also aligns with the mission of the Fitness for Kids Challenge to promote healthy habits and active lifestyles among children. The day will also include interactive activities and engaging entertainment throughout the game.
