Trevor Large


• On staff at Canisius since the 2014-15 campaign, spending three seasons as an assistant coach before being tabbed the seventh head coach in school history in April 2017

• Coached the Golden Griffins to the program’s second AHA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022-23

• Has led the squad to five appearances in the semifinal round of the AHA Postseason Tournament and two championship game appearances (2021, 2023)

• Helped lead Canisius to its first AHA Regular Season Championship in 2016-17, highlighting a campaign that saw the team post a school-record 17-game unbeaten streak

• Has coached 17 players who have earned a total of 28 all-conference accolades during his time at Canisius  

• Mentored two AHA Players of the Year (Charles Williams and Dylan McLaughlin), two AHA Goaltending Champions (Jacob Barczewski and Charles Williams), one AHA Rookie of the Year (Matteo Giampa) and three other league major individual award recipients (Dylan McLaughlin, Cameron Heath and Ryan Schmelzer)

• Influential in the arrival of Williams, who became the program’s first All-American selection and first finalist for both the Hobey Baker and Mike Richter Awards during the 2016-17 campaign

• Played a key role in the development of McLaughlin, who was a Hobey Baker Top 10 finalist in 2017-18 and finished his career tied for the program’s Division I era scoring record with 147 points

• Helped Giampa enjoy a standout freshman campaign in 2023-24 that saw him garner Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year, All-AHA Second Team and AHA-All Rookie Team accolades after ranking among the top 10 freshmen in the nation in both goals and points



• Entering his ninth season as head coach at Canisius (2017-Present)

• Career head coaching record of 112-142-25 (.446)

• Named Canisius head coach on April 28, 2017

• Chair of the NCAA’s Ice Hockey rules committee; member of the committee for the past three seasons

• Served for three seasons as an assistant coach at Canisius under Dave Smith (2014-17)

• Prior to joining Smith’s staff at Canisius, spent six seasons at Army West Point (2008-14)

• Serving as Army’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under longtime head coach Brian Riley.

• During his time with the Black Knights, Large worked with all facets of the program – forwards, defensemen, power play and penalty kill – helping coach six all-conference performers and three selections to the league’s all-rookie team. He also served as the team’s video coordinator.

• Began his coaching career as an assistant at American International College (2006-08) for long-time head coach Gary Wright

• With the Yellow Jackets, Large helped coach a pair of all-conference honorees and recruited AIC’s first players from the prestigious United States Hockey League, as well as a three-time Atlantic Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year



• Four-year letterwinner at Ferris State (2000-04)

• Totaled 19 goals and 14 assists in 129 career games under the guidance of veteran head coach Bob Daniels

• Named the team’s Most Improved Player in 2001

• Helped the Bulldogs capture the 2003 CCHA regular-season championship and first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance



• Large and his wife, Molly, are the proud parents of two children: Broderick and Harper

• Wife, Molly, also attended Ferris State, where she was a member of the women’s basketball program
