Tyler Scheving Steps Down as Cross Country/Track Head Coach

Canisius head cross country/track coach Tyler Scheving announced today (Aug. 27) that he has resigned from his position, effective Sept. 14, to pursue another coaching opportunity.

Scheving has been the head coach of the Golden Griffin cross country/track programs since July 2022. He served as the program's interim head coach for the spring 2022 semester.

"We appreciate the time and energy Tyler put into leading our cross country and track programs," Canisius Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. "Tyler is dedicated to helping provide the best possible experience to the men and women of our program. We wish him the best of luck as he takes this next step in his professional career."

In his time leading the Canisius cross country/track program, Scheving led the men's cross country program to three-straight fifth-place finishes at the MAAC Championships, with former runner Tom Appenheimer placing 10th in both the 2022 and 2023 events. The women's program finished in the top-six of the league at the championship race in three consecutive years, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in 2023, where former Griff Olivia Moran placed second, the best finish for a Canisius female runner at the conference's championship race since 2018.

While serving as interim head coach in 2022, the Blue and Gold enjoyed a successful indoor and outdoor track season, during which the team established several personal and program records. Canisius also had a pair of medalists at the 2022 MAAC Outdoor Track Championships, as Marissa Silba and Andrew Perreault both took home silver medals in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Canisius is set to start the 2025 cross country season on Sept. 6 when both programs take part in the annual Little Three Championships against longtime rivals Niagara and St. Bonaventure. The Canisius men's team has won 18 consecutive Little Three titles, while the Canisius women have taken first in 16 of the last 21 races.

A search to replace Scheving will begin immediately.
