Tarr Named Captain, McDermott and Funk Tabbed Assistants

Canisius hockey head coach Trevor Large announced Monday that senior forward Oliver Tarr has been selected to serve as team captain for the 2025-26 season.

Large also announced that graduate forward Alton McDermott and junior forward Trey Funk will both serve as assistant captains for the upcoming campaign.

"Oliver understands the diverse personalities within the locker room," Large said. "His care for people is impressive. He believes in what it means to be a Griff and how to align everyone towards a common goal. The captain plays a vital role in forging a shared purpose and a collective identity. Oliver has all the tools necessary to shine in that role.

"Sacrifice is the cornerstone of any successful team. It's the willingness to put the team's needs above one's own, to endure hardship for the greater good. Oliver embodies this spirit of sacrifice and inspires their teammates to do the same."

A native of Uxbridge, Ontario, Tarr has appeared in 80 games for the Griffs, amassing 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points. Last season, Tarr posted a career-high eight goals and matched his personal best with 15 points in 30 games played. As a sophomore, he led the squad with five power-play goals while also dishing out a personal-best eight assists.

McDermott, meanwhile, has skated in 85 games during his time with Canisius, racking up 29 points on 15 goals and 14 assists. Last season, the Oakville, Ontario, native returned to the lineup after missing the entire 2023-24 season due to injury and posted career highs with eight assists and 15 points to go along with seven goals. The Canisius hockey Rookie of the Year in 2021-22, McDermott is a
four-time AHA All-Academic Team honoree.

Funk has taken part in 71 games in his first two seasons with the Griffs, recording 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points. As a sophomore, Funk was one of five skaters to appear in all 37 games for Canisius, finishing the campaign tied for third on the team in scoring with 17 points on eight goals and nine assists. A native of Redwood Meadows, Alberta, Funk garnered AHA All-Academic Team accolades in 2023-24.

Canisius opens the 2025-26 season Oct. 3 at home with a non-conference contest against Clarkson. Season tickets for the campaign are still available. They can be purchased by visiting the tickets page on GoGriffs.com or by calling the Canisius Ticket Office at 716-888-TIXX (8466).
