Women's Lacrosse Prevails Over Le Moyne

Junior Maggie Tifft recorded a career-high four goals to lead Canisius to a 20-8 victory over Le Moyne in collegiate women's lacrosse action Wednesday at Ted Grant Field in Syracuse, N.Y.

With the win, Canisius improved to 2-4 overall while the Dolphins slipped to 1-4 on the campaign.

"It was a great team win that showed what we can do when we combine an incredible work rate with high skill level" said head coach Russell Allen. "We had contributions from every player on the field today and this is exactly the momentum we needed heading into our home opener this weekend".

Sophomore Maddie Fitzgerald chipped in offensively with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Lauren Matyka, senior Hailey Rooney and freshman Katie Adams all recorded three points, with each registering two goals and an assist apiece in the winning effort.

Sarah Hunter notched a team-high three goals for Le Moyne.

Rooney and Adams scored back-to-back goals to stake Canisius to a 2-0 lead with 8:48 left in the opening frame. Le Moyne responded a minute later, cutting the deficit in half on a goal from Maddi Barney, but Canisius quickly answered back as it used tallies from Fitzgerald and Adams to take a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.

The second quarter saw the Griffs use goals from four different players to post another 4-1 frame as they carried an 8-2 advantage into the halftime break.

After surrendering the opening goal of the third quarter, Canisius rattled off four unanswered goals to build a 12-4 advantage. The Dolphins temporarily halted the Griffs surge with consecutive tallies to trim their deficit to six, only to Tifft strike twice in the final 13 seconds of the frame to restore Canisius' eight-goal margin heading into the fourth.

Canisius put the game out of reach in the fourth as it outscored the Dolphins by a 5-1 margin, highlighted by freshman Talyor Wolf's first collegiate goal to open the scoring in the final frame.
