Quick Start Sparks Hockey to Sweep of Mercyhurst

Freshman forward Kyan Haldenby scored the first two goals of his collegiate career to highlight a four-goal first period as Canisius cruised to a 5-1 victory over Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Junior Walter Zacher, sophomore Carter Patterson and freshman FJ Buteau also scored for the Golden Griffins (7-6-1, 3-4-1 AHA), who completed a sweep of the weekend series with the four-goal victory. Senior Hunter Andrew dished out three assists and freshman Carter Anderson finished with a pair of helpers while senior goaltender Chase Clark stopped 24-of-25 shots faced to pick up his seventh win of the season.

Spencer Smith accounted for the lone Lakers (0-13-0, 0-7-0 AHA) tally. Chares-Edward Gravel made 20 save in goal for the visitors.

Haldenby opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest, beating Gravel to the blocker side while on a breakaway to give the Griffs the early lead.
Zacher made it a 2-0 contest at the 8:35 mark of the opening frame, depositing a loose puck into the Mercyhurst goal for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Buteau expanded the Canisius cushion to 3-0 with 14:17 elapsed in the first, tapping home sophomore Hunter Price's backdoor feed for his first collegiate tally. Haldenby capped the Griffs' first-period barrage just over one minute to play in the first, backhanding the puck past the blocker of Gravel from close range to make it a 4-0 contest. Patterson expanded the Canisius advantage to 5-0 early in the second period when he beat Gravel with a wrist shot to the blocker side from the middle of the slot for his first goal of the season. Smith spoiled Clark's shutout bid with 7:26 played in the middle frame with a goal on the rush to close out the scoring.
