Hockey Posts Tie Versus Army, Picks up Extra Point in Shootout

Senior Stefano Bottini and freshman Carter Anderson scored to pace Canisius in a 2-2 tie against Army in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.
 
Senior Killian Kiecker-Olson and junior Walter Zacher were both successful their shootout attempts to secure the extra point for the Golden Griffins (5-4-1, 1-2-1 AHA). Senior Chase Clark made 31 saves between the pipes during the contest and stopped both shootout shots he faced.  
 
Jude Brower and Jack Ivey found the back of the net for the Black Knights (3-2-1, 1-2-0 AHA). JJ Cataldo finished with 23 stops for the visitors.
 
Brower opened the scored in the opening minute of the second period when he beat Clark to the glove side during a rush opportunity to the Black Knights the lead.
 
Bottini tied the at the 13:58 mark of the middle frame, depositing a loose puck in the Army goal for his third goal of the season.
Ivey restored Army's lead with just over three minutes to play in the second period, wiring a wrist shot over the blocker of Clark to give Black Knights a 2-1 edge.
 
Anderson brought the Griffs level with 13:47 elapsed in the final frame, taking advantage of a bounce off the glass to get free in the slot before beating Cataldo with a shot to right side to knot the score at 2-2.
The game headed to overtime, and after the teams were unable to score during 3-on-3, a shootout. In the shootout, Kiecker-Olson and Zacher converted on their attempts while Clark stopped Vincent Salice and Billy Batten to earn the extra point.
 
POSTGAME COMMENTS
GAME NOTES
• Army outshout Canisius by a 33-25 margin for the contest, highlighted by a combined 22-9 edge during the first and third periods.
• The Black Knights were 1-for-3 on the power play while the Griffs were 0-for-3 with the extra attacker.
• Canisius won its first shootout since defeating Army, 2-0, in a best-of-three shootout on home ice back on Nov. 25, 2022.
• The Griffs moved to 90-18-11 under Trevor Large when holding their opponent to two goals or fewer in a game. All six of the Griffs wins and ties this season have come when holding the opposition to two goals or less.  
• Both Bottini and Anderson scored their third goals of the season on Saturday.
• Freshman Cole Miller recorded his first collegiate point with an assist on Anderson's equalizer in the third period.
• Clark finished with 30-or-more saves in a game for the fourth time this season and improved to 2-1-1 when doing so.
• Senior Robert Kincaid and sophomore Hunter Price both recorded their second assists of the season during Saturday's contest.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius travels to Sacred Heart Nov. 14-15 for a two-game AHA series at Martire Family Arena in Fairfield, Conn.
 
Game one of the series between the Griffs and Pioneers is slated for 7 p.m. while the finale is scheduled for a 5 p.m. puck drop.
