Hockey Drops Opener at Sacred Heart

Felix Trudeau recorded his first career hat trick and Gavin Bryant added two goals and an assist to power Sacred Heart in a 6-1 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at Martire Family Arena in Fairfield, Conn.
 
Trudeau struck twice on the power play to power the Pioneers (4-5-1, 3-3-1 AHA) to their first home victory of the season. Mikey Adamson dished out two assists and Cole Galata was credited with SHU's sixth goal of the contest. Ajeet Gundarah finished with 24 stops between the pipes for the Pioneers.
 
Senior Oliver Tarr accounted for the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (5-5-1, 1-3-1 AHA). Senior Chase Clark got the start in goal and finished with 13 saves.
 
Trudeau opened the scoring with 14:48 elapsed in the opening frame as he slid Stephane Huard's centering feed into the Canisius goal to give Sacred Heart the lead.
 
Galata doubled the Pioneers advantage less than four minutes into the middle frame, playing a puck off the end wall in front of the Canisius goal that deflected off a Griffs defender and into the goal to make it a 2-0 game.
 
Trudeau struck for the second time in the contest with a power-play goal at the 11:31 mark of the middle frame, beating Clark to the glove side from the middle of the slot to expand the SHU cushion to 3-0.
 
Tarr got Canisius on the board with less than three minutes to play in the second when he deflected senior Jack Pascucci's point shot past Gundarah to trim the Griffs deficit to 3-1.
The Pioneers scored three times in the third to put the game out of reach. Trudeau finished off his hat trick with this second power play goal of the contest with 3:24 elapsed in the final frame while Bryant struck at the 8:14 mark of the stanza before adding his second of the period with 18 seconds to play to compete the victory.
 
POSTGAME COMMENTS
GAME NOTES
• Canisius outshot Sacred Heart by a 24-19 margin for the contest, holding the edge in shots in all three periods.
• Sacred Heart was 2-for-6 on the power play while Canisius was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
• Canisius was held to two goals or fewer for the fifth time this season and fourth straight contest. The Griffs moved to 0-4-1 in those games.
• Tarr recorded his third goal of the season with his second-period tally. All three of his goals this season have come at even strength.
• Pascucci notched his third assist of the campaign with his helper on Tarr's second-period goal.
• Senior Killian Kiecker-Olson posted his first assist of the season on Tarr's tally, picking up the secondary assist.
• Freshman forward Kyan Haldenby made his collegiate debut on Friday.
• Senior Stefano Bottini attempted a penalty shot in the third period, the first for a Canisius skater since Griffin Loughran had a penalty shot against Holy Cross on Nov. 3, 2023.
