Hockey Claims Opening-Night Victory over No. 20 Clarkson

Canisius used goals from three different players and a 31 save-performance from graduate goaltender Chase Clark to record a 3-1 victory over No. 20 Clarkson in collegiate men's hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Senior Grant Porter finished with a goal and an assist while fellow senior Hunter Andrew and junior Walter Zacher also found the back of the net for the Golden Griffins (1-0-0).

Matthew Mayiach scored his first collegiate goal for the Golden Knights (0-1-0). Shane Soderwall made 29 stops between the pipes for Clarkson.

Zacher opened the scoring at the 12:05 mark of the first period with a power play goal, firing a wrist shot from the right point past Soderwall for his first in a Canisius uniform.
Andrew doubled the Griffs advantage to 2-0 moments before the midway point in the contest as he snuck a wrist shot through Soderwall from the right face-off circle. Mayich brought the Golden Knights within one at the 13:33 mark of the third, wiring a shot from the point that beat Clark to the blocker side for his first collegiate tally.

Porter put the game out of reach in the final minute, scoring into an empty net with 12 seconds to play to determine the two-goal margin of victory.
