Hockey Skates Past St. Lawrence Sunday

Graduate goaltender Chase Clark recorded 34 saves to propel Canisius to a 4-2 victory over St. Lawrence in collegiate men's ice hockey action Sunday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Seniors Stefano Bottini and Grant Porter and juniors Rhys Chiddenton and Trey Funk accounted for the four goals for the Golden Griffins (2-0-0), who opened a season at 2-0-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign.

Sam LeDrew and Tyler Cristall notched the two goals for the visiting Saints (0-2-0). Colin Winn finished with 31 saves in his collegiate debut.

Chiddenton opened the scoring at the 6:19 mark of the first period, beating Winn with a wrist shot under the glove while on the rush for his first goal in a Canisius uniform.
Bottini doubled the Griffs advantage less than four minutes into the second period as he snuck a shot past Winn from below the left face-off circle to make it a 2-0 contest. LeDrew cut the Canisius advantage in half at the 12:40 mark of the middle frame, beating Clark to the left side from the middle of the slot for his first collegiate tally.

Funk restored the Griffs two-goal cushion with a power-play marker just before the nine-minute mark of the third, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with a shot under the blocker of Winn to make it a 3-1 contest.
The teams traded goals in the final two minutes of regulation. Porter notched his second empty-net goal of the weekend with 1:08 remaining to extend the Canisius lead to 4-1 while Cristall beat Clark on the rush with 10 seconds to play to determine the final margin.
