Swimming and Diving Splits with Rochester

The Canisius men's swimming and diving team scored a 168-125 win over the University of Rochester, while the Yellow Jacket women's team posted a 176.5-122.5 victory over the Golden Griffin women's team in tri-match Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.

The Canisius women's team competed against Siena as well on Saturday, and fell to the Saints by a score of 155-143.

The Griffs started the day off in style, with both the men's and women's 200-yard medley relay teams scoring first-place finishes. The women's team of sophomore Daphne Mead and juniors Cassandra Ercoli, Leyna Swanson and Evie Leighton took top-honors in the first event of the day by besting a Siena relay team by 0.02 seconds. In the men's 200-yard medley relay, the team of Elliot Somers, Sam Vidal, Toby Mayfield and Peyton Gilliland finished first with a time of 1:34.55, which was nearly a full three seconds in front of second-place Rochester.

Mead won multiple events on Saturday, as she touched the wall first in both the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard IM. Her time of 2:06.25 in the 200 backstroke was not only 5.21 seconds faster than the next closest swimmer, it also set a new pool record at Rochester's Speegle-Wilbraham Aquatic Center.

Leighton recorded a pair of first-place finishes as well for the Blue and Gold. She won the 200-yard freestyle race with her time of 1:56.92, and then followed that performance by winning the 100-yard freestyle event. Junior Lauren Martin also won an event, posting a victory in the 1,000-yard free with a time of 11:13.55.

In the men's competition, Vidal won the 100-yard breaststroke by more than a full two seconds before cruising to a victory in the 500-yard freestyle. Somers took top-honors in the 200-yard freestyle race and junior Luke Critchlow placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with his time of 2:00.85. Sophomore Giovanni Poggio also won two events, touching the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM.

The swimming and diving teams will open the home portion of the 2025-26 season Oct. 24 when the teams host Geneseo at the ECC Flickinger Center Pool in downtown Buffalo. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
