Giampa Tabbed Preseason All-AHA

Canisius sophomore forward Matteo Giampa was named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Hockey America Team, league officials announced on Tuesday.
 
The reigning AHA Rookie of the Year and an All-AHA Second Team selection, Giampa enjoyed a stellar rookie campaign last season, registering 18 goals, 17 assists and 35 points in 36 games played to lead the Golden Griffins in all three major offensive statistical categories. He finished the 2023-24 campaign tied for the third most points and most goals by a first-year player in AHA history.
 
The Virgil, Ontario, product, ended the season ranked among the top 10 freshmen in Division I in both goals and points, completing the campaign ranked tied for eighth in goals and tied for 10th in points among first-year players. Giampa was one of just seven skaters in the AHA to average more than a point per game during league play, pacing the Griffs with 27 points on 14 goals and 13 assists.
 
In a vote of the league's 11 head coaches, Sacred Heart was tabbed the favorite to claim the league's regular-season crown as the Pioneers received five first-place votes and 102 total points.
 
Defending AHA regular season and tournament champion RIT garnered three first-place votes and 94 total points to claim second. Holy Cross was one point behind RIT in third with 93 total points, followed by AIC (84) and Bentley (76). Niagara (67), Air Force (57), Canisius (45) occupied spots six through eight while Mercyhurst (36), Army (32) and Robert Morris (29) rounded out the poll.
 
Canisius opens the 2024-25 season Oct. 5-6 with non-conference contests at ECAC rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Griffs' home opener is slated for Oct. 11-12 against RPI.
